The PROBE program for gifted students at Cross Keys Middle
School is designed to stretch the intellect, broaden awareness
of career opportunities, acquaint students with cultural events
in visual and performing arts, and provide opportunities to develop
leadership skills. PROBE enables students to apply problem solving
techniques in a variety of areas. These interests are further
expanded when the outside world becomes their classroom through
professional speakers and off-campus study.

Qualifying for PROBE
The student identification process for participation in PROBE,
a gifted program for students who qualify, consists of two parts:
1) screening and referral; and 2) individual evaluation and selection.
The selection process incorporates screening and referral,
individual evaluation, mental ability or I.Q., academic ability,
creativity, reasoning and problem-solving.
The state guidelines for participation in PROBE are as follows:
- 95% total battery on the SAT
- 125 or above on WISC-R III I.Q. test
- 3.5 grade point average on last report card
- Reading level score of 3 years above grade level
- 3 or more teacher recommendations
The program which is funded through the Missouri Department
of Elementary and Secondary Education, requires enrollment to
be five percent of the school's population. Final selection for
seventh-grade students occurs after first quarter report cards
are issued.
