School Mission Statement

The educational mission of McCluer High School is to create and sustain a personalized learning environment where students both acquire and use knowledge as preparation for their vocations and as a means of enriching their lives. Staff, students and community will create an atmosphere of decency that promotes self-respect and responsibility for others based on mutual appreciation and understanding. Because the truly complete adult possesses a capacity to both appreciate life and analyze it, desires to communicate using language and aesthetic expression, explores the world with unique curiosity, and participates responsibly in society, McCluer will foster an intellectual focus that is inclusive of academic standards, challenging to all, and nourishing to the individuality of each.

Goals
The McCluer faculty has defined what the McCluer graduate should know and be able to do as follows:

 3. Citizenship

4. Problem Solving
The McCluer graduate will identify problems, access resources, use information, and formulate and evaluate solutions through critical and creative thinking processes.

 5. Interpersonal
The McCluer graduate will acquire strategies to think with an open mind, to respect and understand differences, and to value diverse thinking.

Philosophy

McCluer High School values diversity and adheres to the philosophy that "there is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequals." Recognizing that what is in the best interest of one student may be totally different for another student, the McCluer staff addresses student need on an individual level. If a student scores 35 on the ACT, McCluer provides challenging classes and curriculum. If a student has a learning disability, McCluer's Special School District teachers tailor a program to the specific needs of that student. If a student enters McCluer with a questionable outlook for success, a team of teachers works with that student to achieve a successful high school experience. If a student speaks no English, McCluer provides an English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for support.

McCluer provides:

  • an advisement program where students are assigned to a faculty member who serves as their advocate for all four years.
  • a schoolwide emphasis on writing.
  • a schoolwide emphasis on oral communication.
  • a schoolwide emphasis on inference and analysis.
  • comprehensive opportunities to explore post-high school options.
  • a major emphasis on a tone of decency.

The staff at McCluer engages all segments of the school community in decision making. For seven years, McCluer has been involved in the Coalition of Essential Schools and has had an active Coalition Committee to guide school restructuring. The Coalition Committee, which is open to all teachers and administrators, includes central office staff, middle school staff and parent representatives. The Student Task Force, which is comprised of student representatives, interacts with the Coalition Committee and has had significant input in decision making.
