Inspired Patriotism

ROTC students at McCluer High School unfurl a flag made by students in a Family and Consumer Science Class. The 24' by 36' flag contains 101 square yards of fabric. Made in the wake of September 11, the flag will hang in the Little Theater.

STARS Shine on Exceptional Science Student
A McCluer High School Senior has earned an award for excellence in research for a paper she submitted after completing a research project at the University of Missouri St. Louis. The student studied boron chemistry as a participant in the Students and Teachers As Research Scientists (STARS) program. The student's paper best exemplified the difficulty and complexity of the research, the appropriateness of the research methodology, findings, quality of writing and an overall quality of the research process according to the selection committee that review all submissions.

A McCluer High School Science Teacher was selected to participate in an Authentic Science Research program that will give students the opportunity to study a chosen field of scientific interest over a three-year period. The program is offered through the STARS program at the University of Missouri St. Louis, and introduces junior and senior high school students to the fundamentals of scientific research under the guidance of mentors in academic, private and governmental research institutions. STARS is sponsored by the National Science Foundation/Solutia Inc., Saint Louis University, University of Missouri St. Louis and Washington University.

Key Issues II Institute
Three McCluer High School Teachers attended the Key Issues II training institute in Racine, Wisc., through a grant from the Monsanto Corp. The Institute provides educators with the process, skills and confidence to enhance science education through the investigation of local sustainable issues with their students.

All-State Ensemble
Nine students from McCluer and McCluer North high schools were chosen to perform in the High School All-State Ensemble groups for Orchestra, Jazz Band or Choir at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference.

DAR Good Citizen Award
A McCluer High School senior was selected as a DAR Good Citizen by her peers and faculty based on her qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Teacher Selected for Leadership Program
A McCluer High School teacher was among 41 area teachers who participated in a year-long leadership program to broaden understanding of and participation in the St. Louis community. The Community Leadership Program for Teachers offers seminars on government, social services, the arts, health care and the environment. The experience is designed to encourage teachers and their students to become active participants in their school communities and the community at large.

Upward Bound Math and Science Program
A McCluer High School sophomore was one of 50 students in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska selected to attend the Upward Bound Math and Science Regional Center Program at Northwest Missouri State University. Selected through a recommendation and interview process, the student participated in intensive research projects and hands-on experiences in math and science during the six-week, all-expense paid program. The student will work with a mentor and conduct a self-guided project during the current school year.

McCluer Earns Exemplary Physical Education Program Award
The physical education program at McCluer High School has been honored with an Exemplary Gold Program Award from the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health and the Missouri Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The McCluer physical education program is one of only two in the state to receive this recognition.
