CHARACTER PLUS…February –
Humanity – Week # 4
FOCUS: Humanity
THOUGHT OF THE MONTH: The
ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and
convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
DEFINITION: Humanity believes that people of
different cultures, abilities, religions, sexes, and races are equally valuable
members of our society.
DESCRIPTION: A
humanitarian is a person who has concern for the welfare of mankind. A humanitarian actively works to improve
conditions for all people because a humanitarian accepts all people as worthy
individuals. Each person is different;
one student may dress in jeans, another in shorts; one student may speak
English and another Chinese; one student may like to read and another may like
sports.
These
differences make mankind interesting.
If each person learns about the beliefs and customs of others, his or
her life will be enriched. To show
humanity then, a person should not judge others harshly because they are
different.
Disagreeing with someone is acceptable but a
person should not criticize or hold a grudge against an individual because he
or she looks, thinks or acts in a foreign manner. Instead, to show humanity, a person should be kind, considerate,
a good citizen, interested, understanding and helpful.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Democracy
means not, “I am equal to you,” but “you are equal to me.” -- Unknown
TOPIC: Cultural diversity.
SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES:
1. Allow students
the opportunity to share their ethnic make-up.
2. Encourage
students to participate in National Black History Month celebrations in the St.
Louis Metro Area.
3. Encourage
students to support National Black History Month activities in the school.
