• Board of Education Listening Tour Updates

    April 27, 2022

On Wednesday, April 27, the Board of Education held a special meeting focused on school safety with students. This virtual meeting was the second stop on a listening tour designed to create more opportunities for District stakeholders to have two-way communication with Board members that isn't possible in the regular meeting format.  The Board hopes to hold future listening tour meetings in-person to allow even greater interaction.

The focus for the second session featured students, sharing their thoughts, ideas and concerns around safety in our schools.

You can view the whole group portion of the meeting at Board of Education Listening Tour on School Safety with Students.

Prior to this meeting, we explored the top-rated thoughts shared through ThoughtExchange and four themes emerged. Each of the themes was discussed in breakout rooms where students had an opportunity to voice their concerns and suggest solutions. You can see a summary of the discussion in each of the breakout rooms by clicking the links below.

    Facilities/Food/Clothing/Uniforms

    Mental Health

    CUBES/Comprehensive Safety Plan

    Physical Health

The evening was full of good discussions focused on solutions to safety concerns.  District leadership has begun to implement some of the suggestions shared that evening and are including other suggestions as we plan for the 2022-2023 school year.  Some of these include:

    Strengthening social-emotional supports

Increasing the number of social workers

Increasing the use of restorative justice practices to address behavioral concerns

Ensuring Tier 1 supports and universals are in place in every school as part of our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

Installing additional safety measures at doors

Exploring more opportunities for parents to be in buildings as the need for COVID mitigation strategies eases

Exploring the possibility of safety monitors

We know that as we’ve returned to in-person learning, there have been many challenges not only in Ferguson-Florissant, but across the nation.  We’re all adjusting to working, teaching, and learning face to face after an extended period of interacting virtually.  Many of the challenges in our schools have revolved around safety.  We developed a ThoughtExchange where stakeholders shared concerns around safety in our schools.  This meeting focused on exploring solutions to those concerns with discussions in breakout rooms focused on specific safety concerns.
