Drive Safely in School Zones
School is in session, and you know what that means...SLOW DOWN. Since the pandemic, we have had more students who are car riders this year than ever before, which increases traffic congestion during arrival and dismissal times. Remember to drive safely and be aware of your surroundings—especially in school zones.
- Slow Down. Whether in a school zone, the school parking lot, or residential neighborhood, parents and teen drivers should keep their speed low and be prepared to stop quickly for increased traffic. STOP AND LOOK FOR KIDS who may be crossing the street or parking lot.
- Always Stop for School Buses. Flashing yellow lights on a school bus indicate it is preparing to stop to load or unload children, and drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on and off. Per Missouri Law, drivers are required to stop their vehicles and wait until the red lights stop flashing.
- Keep Track of Time. Be aware of the time of day you are on the road and how that coincides with the school day. More school-age children are harmed from 7-8 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. than any other hours of the day.
- Allow Extra Time to Reach Your Destination. Due to weather, an abundance of car traffic, or typical traffic congestion, it may be beneficial if you plan your time ahead, giving yourself a few extra minutes in order to arrive or leave the school campus safely. This can help cut down on unsafe driving practices we may all experience when we are in a rush.
- Come to a Complete Stop. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks, parking lots, and crosswalks before proceeding.
- Eliminate Distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of an accident. Children can be quick, crossing the road or parking lot unexpectedly. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone.
